SL-based conferences

Here's an article on virtual conferences in SL.

I found this part particularly funny:

At a virtual panel discussion moderated by Uribe and Cabra, an avatar stretched and yawned. “The speaker said, “Am I boring you?’‚” Uribe said.

“And apologies were exchanged all around,” Cabra added.

IRL, a yawn might be a largely instinctual act -- not heavily controlled, you might try to hide it. That someone deliberately had their avatar yawn, well ...

  1. Funny!

Every time I see an interesting conference presentation or seminar that I can't make because of cost or location, I look to see if there is a SL version that I can sit in on. So far I haven't been able to attend one, but hopefully soon.

  2. I'm still trying to figure out what the advantage of SL (or any virtual world) has over Web conferencing. Thinking back to our CA/DA class I can't imagine being any more immersed than I was in that synchronous class. And if I were talking in a synchronous virtual world event and someone virtually yawned then I might need to virtually slap them. ;)
